Here we reproduce this excellent introduction to the 1911 transport strike, produced for the North West TUC by Sam Davies (Prof. of History, LJMU) and Ron Noon (retired LJMU). Also included are a number of appendices: a brief chronology of the strike, 'Fred Bower and the Secret Under the Stone', 'Fred Bower and the S.S. Baltic' and 'Casualism on Liverpool Docks'. Many thanks to the authors, who have been resolute in their meticulous work and research on the period.
